Math Diagnostic

Math Test Directions

The math portion of the exam uses two different question types.  Before you begin your Diagnostic Test, make sure that you are familiar with both.

For some of the questions that follow, you are asked a question and given two statements.  Choose the answer that best describes whether or not the statements alone or in combination provide enough data to answer the question asked.

Example:

Which copy machine, X or Y, makes copies at the faster rate?

(1) Machine X makes 90 copies per minute.
(2) In three minutes, X makes 1.5 more copies than Y.

  • Statement 1 alone is sufficient to answer the question, but statement 2 alone is not.

  • Statement 2 alone is sufficient to answer the question, but statement 1 alone is not.

  • Both statements together are needed to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient.

  • Either statement by itself is sufficient to answer the question.

  • Not enough information is given to answer the question.

Statement (2) alone is sufficient to establish that X works faster than Y, but statement (1) is not.  So you should choose the second answer.

For all other questions, choose the best answer.

Example:

If x + 5 = 9, then 3x =

  • 1

  • 4

  • 12

  • 18

  • 36

Since x = 4, 3x = 12.  And the third choice is correct.
